1956 - 57 Dr Pearse O'Malley (No 4)
Dr. Patrick Pearse O'Malley, (1918 - 2004) M.B., F.R.C.P., F.R.C. Psych. was born in Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh, into a strongly nationalist family. His parents were Patrick and Susan Mallie. He was educated locally and with the Christian Brothers in Newry. He studied medicine in Queen's College Belfast and University College Dublin. He married Mary Hickey of Cork in 1947. He worked in Dublin, Bristol, London and Belfast where he was the founding Director of the Neuro-Psychiatric Clinic at the Mater Infirmorum Hospital and was Clinical Teacher at Queens University from 1946 - 1980. Later he was Consultant Neuro-Psychiatrist to the Ulster Independent Clinic in Belfast. The author of several professional papers, he was appointed a member of the Tribune d'appel des maladies mentales in 1962. A member of the Newman Society and the Union des acteurs dramatiques, he was a foundation trustee of the Lyric Players Theatre Belfast of which his wife Mary was co-founder and artistic Director. He started to use the O'Malley form of his surname just before going to work in Belfast, and from 1953 was closely involved with the O'Malley clan gatherings in Mayo, was chosen as chieftain, and helped establish the Granuaile Trust to fund genealogical and historical research. He was elected Chieftain No 4 of the O'Malley Clan in 1956 and served as Guardian Chieftain from 1988 to 1991. His rally in 1957 included the laying of a wreath on the grave of Granuaile in the abbey on Clare Island. The Dictionary of Irish Biography has an entry for both him and his wife Mary.
