1968-69 Stíofán Ó Máille (No 16)

Stiofán ÓMáille (1920 - 1978) was born in Ballyglunin, Co Galway, the son of James O'Malley from Portcarron, Oughterard and Sarah Hession from Gortbeg, Ballyglunin. He was educated at the Christian Brothers School in Tuam. In 1938 Stiofan and his siblings Padraig, Sean and Mary set up a business selling homespun yarns, handwoven tweeds and made-to-measure clothing in Dominick Street, Galway. Importantly, they made contact with cottage knitters from nearby locations such as the Aran Islands and Connemara -  Stiofán was a fluent Irish speaker -  and  employed them to make custom-made pieces, predominately the iconic Aran sweater. Over time, the Ó Máille name became internationally known for its sweaters and tweeds, particularly when they were invited to make costumes for the stars of 'The Quiet Man' being filmed in Connemara, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.

Stiofán became good friends with Maureen O'Hara,  He also worked with famed American director John Huston, who became an Irish citizen and had a house in St Cleran's in Craughwell, Co Galway. He often sourced special fabric for Huston's hunting jackets and tailored them for him, as well as  making clothing for his daughter, actress Anjelica Huston.

Stiofán was elected the 16th Chieftain of the O'Malley Clan in 1968 and held his rally in Galway in 1969.
