Grace O'Malley Purcell (1925 - 1991) was born in Westport, Co Mayo, the daughter of John J. O'Malley and Sabina Joyce. She was educated in the Sacred Heart School, Taylor's Hill, Galway and the Dominican Convent in Cabra, Dublin. She qualified as a radiography, but later switched to the hotel industry, working abroad and in the family-owned Ormond Hotel in Dublin. She married J. Oliver Purcell, engineer in 1956 and had four children - Sabina, Linus, Gráinne and Róisín. Grace travelled extensively with her husband and had many interests, including reading, current affairs, bridge, golf, history, social work, music and especially the O'Malley Clan, who elected her Chieftain No 29 in 1981.
