The position of Guardian Chieftain is unique among the Clans of Ireland. To quote the founders: 'The Guardian Chieftain acts as a sort of permanent civil servant in conference with the current Chieftain, is interested in all Clan affairs at home and abroad and is "head" during an interregnum.

The ceremonial Torc worn by Guardian Chieftains of the O'Malley Clan. It was presented to the Clan by Dr Sheila Mulloy in 1997. Designed by Derek McGowan of Creative Lewelery, Aughnagower, Westport, it based on gold jewellery manufactured in Ireland in the pre-Christian era and is made of architectural bronze.

O'Malley Clan Committee

The O'Malley Clan Committee managed the affairs of the O'Malley Clan Association from its foundation in 1953 until superseded in 2022 by the Council of Chieftains set up in the newly-enacted Constitution. The roles of the Committee and Council are essentially the same, but the Council is chaired by the Guardian Chieftain ex-officio, rather than having a separate Chair and all former Chieftains are entitled to membership of the Council if they so wish.
