1972-73 Gerry O'Malley (No 20)

Gerry O'Malley (1929 - 2006) was the youngest of the thirteen children of John O'Malley from Clare Island and Ellen Whelan from Rathdowney, Co Laois. He graduated from University College Dublin with an engineering degree and worked for some years in Ireland and Sweden A period of world travel was followed by ten years spent writing in North Mayo. He has had radio plays and stories broadcast by the BBC and RTE, including The Factory, first broadcast by BBC in 1981, later rewritten for RTE in 1983; The Burning at Ballinalea 1995 and Death of a Dog, produced in 1998 at the Focus theatre in Dublin and later broadcast on RTE radio, He was a regular contributor to Sunday Miscellany the long-running popular RTE Radio One programme and also contributed to the An Irishman's Diary column in The Irish Times newspaper. He married Betty Rock and they had two children. They later lived near Bray, Co Wicklow. where he died in 2006. He was elected Chieftain No 20 of the O'Malley Clan in 1972 and held his rally in Limerick, to persuade the Limerick O'Malleys to become more involved with the Clan. He served as Guardian Chieftain from 1991 to 1994. His brother Michael (No 18), his nephew Declan (No 30), his niece Ellen (No 41) and several other members of his family also served as Chieftains.
